The department of Applied Sciences and Humanities is headed by Prof. (Dr.) B.M. Bahal. A graduate(Hons) from B.H.U. Varanasi, and post graduate and Ph.D from I.I.T. Kanpur.
Professor Bahal has more than 35 years of extensive research and teaching experience. His research areas include experimental Nuclear Physics and Fast Neutron Physics. His other area of interest has been molecular biophysics, for which he worked at T.I.F.R., Bombay as National Associate. He has been associated with various International Research organizations and was a visiting scientist at GKSS Nuclear Research Center Hamburg, Germany.
He has wide range of publications (23 research papers, and 19 reports) in National and International Journals. He has presented several research papers in International / national conferences and has supervised a number of master level dissertations.
DIVISION OF CHEMISTRY
The Division of Chemistry works at the interface of Chemistry with Biology. It is engaged in the studies of Anti-Fungal Bi- Benzyl with heterocyclic moieties., Mixed Ligand Complexes of Bivalent Metal Ions, and synthesis of Piperazine Derivatives. Also a group has started working on the effects of Environmental Pollution.
Faculty members of the Division teach a range of chemistry as well as environment related courses to B.Tech. students. The Division is now poised to started inter-disciplinary programmes at the Masters level jointly with other engineering departments.
DIVISION OF MATHEMATICS
The division of Mathematics is doing research in mathematical modeling, Reliability Theory, Graph Theory, and nonlinear dynamics. Faculty members of the division presented two papers in national conferences and published one in an Indian Journal in the last year.
In its teaching, the division emphasizes the role of analytical and rational thinking. The aim is to make students utilize existing mathematical tools and techniques in solving real problems. the division teaches mathematics at all levels in B.Tech., M.Tech. and MCA courses, including courses for senior students, particularly in Computer related areas.
DIVISON OF PHYSICS
The divison of Physics has groups working on Solar Radiations & Plasma Diagnostics and on Ultra Sonics. The Division presented two research papers in national conferences in the 2006-2007 academic session.
In addition to teaching Physics to first year B.Tech. students, the division also participates in teaching advanced courses in the Engineering Departments. for example, it teaches Electromagnetic Theory and Optical Tinstrumentation to students in E&C Engineering and E&I Engineering.
The division is now working closely with Engineering Departments to formulate Masters programmes in Nanotechnology.
DIVISION OF HUMANITIES
Thsi Division attempts to round off the technical personality of students with soft skills, communication and social behavioural skills. Indeed, the basic employabitity of an engineering student in India is highly loaded in favour of well rounded engineering capabilities. Besides the prescribed courses of UPTU, the division also teaches other special courses for personality development, group discussion techniques, etc.
The division is particular about proficiency in English. It relies on a computer based, multimedia language system that enables the instructor to listen to any student and to record and playback voice to improve language use. the division encourages interaction in the classroom and emphasizes the role of self learning in acquiring communication skills.
